The City responds to Cycling Fatalities
(Press Release) City stresses steps to avoid bicycle and truck collisions
TORONTO, April 28 /CNW/ - Toronto's Cycling Committee Chair, Councillor Adam Giambrone (Ward 18 Davenport), together with City staff and Sergeant Brian Bowman, Toronto Police Services, spoke today about recent fatalities and ways to avoid bicycle and truck collisions.
"We all have a responsibility to ensure that cyclists are safe on our road," said Councillor Giambrone. "The fact is that the last five cyclist deaths in Toronto have involved trucks, and it's a pattern we can't ignore. Most cyclist collisions are not with trucks, but those that are tend to be deadly. Truck drivers and cyclists have to be aware of each other and the safest way to share the road." (read on in the comments) ...

Getting away with it
Good Luck Derek!
There are many great
candidates for CityIdol
but Derek Chadbourne gets my vote.
Smart, witty, big-hearted and easy going.
One of those caring people who understands the city and knows what it needs to be great.

2 cyclists killed in vehicle collisions
By CHRIS DOUCETTE, TORONTO SUN
The city had its first two cyclist fatalities of the year yesterday in separate incidents.
"It's such a tragic, tragic mar on a beautiful, sunny day," Sgt. Darla Tannahill, of the Toronto Police traffic services unit, said shortly after a man was run over by a dump truck on Avenue Rd., just north of Eglinton Ave. W.
"It's so sad," she said. "These are preventable."
Police said the cyclist and the dump truck were both heading south on Avenue Rd. around 8:40 a.m. in the curb lane when the truck turned right on Cortleigh Blvd. and there was a collision.
The cyclist was wearing a helmet, but it was not enough to save his life. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police were trying to locate the man's family and did not immediately release his name. The driver of the truck, owned by J. Chefero Sand & Gravel Ltd., remained on the scene all morning.
The second tragedy happened around 9 p.m. at Keele St. and Finch Ave., when a teenaged girl was hit by a tractor-trailer.
She too was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses to either crash can call police at 416-808-1900 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS.

10. I need my car for work.
Many transportation tasks could be handled equally well if not better on a bike. Meet with your employer and see if your company might not benefit from a more environmentally friendly image if you conducted your business by bike. Consider that many traditional tasks adapt well to cycling, whether it's police work, meter reading, postal delivery, etc.

Velo City! - A Vision for Equality
Hot wheels, high up (The Star)Good morning, Toronto. It's sunny and minus 40 with the wind chill. Traffic is frozen on the Gardiner. There's a pile-up on the DVP. Streetcars on King West and Queen East are at a standstill. Cyclists, however, are once again enjoying a smooth, unobstructed journey into the downtown core. Riders report that visibility is clear, ...

1.5 Metres of Safety for CyclistsApr. 15, 2006. 01:00 AM
I'm what you'd call a seasonal urban cyclist. I don't enjoy riding in the rain and have long refused to navigate icy roads or snow. Each winter, I reluctantly put away my bike and take the streetcar to work only to eagerly await spring or at least the mild weather when I can jump back on my battered 21-speed hybrid.

She owns a Bicycle Shop, She drives a Hummer
The Hummer Mystique - Photo by Sarah Leen "This is my everyday vehicle," says this Hummer lover, who puts 40,000 miles (60,000 kilometers) a year on her H1 running errands that include a fast-food stop for lunch near her bicycle shop in an Atlanta, Georgia, suburb.
Two years ago she bought the Hummer as a cool, outdoor come-on for the business. "Everyone's reaction is still, Wow! she says. "A lot of people want to sit in it."
With two small children, she also likes the safety that such a big vehicle offers. The price? $110,000, plus $60 of diesel every three or four day, worth every cent, as far as Linda is concerned. Source

More Bike Lanes This Summer?
"Bike Lane Plan Catches Wind"It's not heaven on wheels, but it's a start: Toronto and East York Community Council voted Tuesday, April 4, to approve bike lanes on both sides of Harbord between Ossington and Grace, and on the east side of a short stretch of Logan between Eastern and Lakeshore.
"Cyclists are rightly frustrated that plans to develop the Bike Network seem to be progressing slowly," says Trinity-Spadina Councillor Joe Pantalone.
"This doesn't quite do the job, but at least it moves us in the right direction."
Pantalone also mentions future plans for a lane on Strachan from Lakeshore to Liberty Village. The bike lane plan, which still has to be approved by council, will cost $30,000 and eat up 31 parking spaces on Harbord, including 18 overnight spaces. And here's where the friction lies - polls of area residents still need to be completed before final approval can be given. In the east end, three overnight parking spaces will have to be sacrificed for what will be the city's shortest bike lane. But if all goes well at council later this month, cyclists could be pedalling on the new lanes as early as this summer.
