RIP Jack Layton. But I have to wonder why he thought that a bike lane is something that should be painted onto the road. Painted line bike lanes are really the minimal offering and should not dominate. What about cycle tracks? Separated bike lanes (when traffic gets above 20mph, bikes should be separated)? Antidooring lanes? Shared sidewalk bike paths? Even the Economist has a low opinion of the safety of painted line bike lanes. http://www.economist.com/node/21528302
