Bike lane cash squandered (Letter to the Star)

Markham takes strides for bikes June 29.
I guess we should be happy that Lorenzo Mele, the transportation demand manager for Markham, isn't an accountant. How could he explain his admiration for Toronto's bike plan when Markham can create 100 kilometres of bicycle lanes with $350,000 and Toronto could only create one kilometre of bike lane last year with $2.2 million? Toronto taxpayers deserve an explanation as to why so much money is squandered with so little results.
Many residents need an affordable, safe alternative to the ever increasing cost of public transit and cycling is one of those alternatives.

Toronto city council continues to fail its taxpayers.
The irony here is that the co-chair of the Toronto cycling committee and touted future chair of the TTC, Councillor Adam Giambrone, has twice supported raising TTC fares in the last year along with endorsing an untendered TTC subway car purchase that may needlessly cost taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars we do not have. Giambrone has been a poor advocate for Toronto's bike plan; let us not let him repeat his performance with the TTC until he fixes the deficiencies in the Bike Plan's progress.
