The Numbers
Bike Lanes Before Bike Plan: 35 km Added in Years 1-3: 28 km Added in 2005: 0 km Proposed to be added in the next 7 years: 421 km Total Network after completion: 484 km Bike Plan Funding (projected vs. actual): -4,7 Million.
I noticed they were digging up Royal York Road when I passed by today so maybe there will be some in '05 even if they are the pathetic 1.25m variety. Have you sent your petition to Mayor Miller yet or waiting for more signatures? Honestly I think there is already pretty good coverage of bike lanes in the downtown core, but some more in the speedier suburb roads would be nice. Some of the roads proposed on the bike plan are already quite friendly to bike on and I think that with a bad bike lane/parking lane configuration they could end up making them worse not better.
1.25m is NOT a Bike Lane. The city has been placed on notice from its own lawyers to refrain from putting Bike Lane markings on that section of Royal York so they won't get sued. Therefore, the total for 2005 stays at zero. Same for Spadina. We are still collecting signatures. PLEASE sign the petition if you have not already since we need about 2,500 to have the best possible impact. We got about 1,600 so far. The Petition will remain open until June 30th, after that we're handing it in.
Yup I did sign the petition (way back when) Spadina is obviously not a bike lane (isn't it like 0.6m or something?) Its hard for me to visualize 1.25 but obviously if the lawyers didn't want the markings, you're right, not a bike lane. But I'm still convinced the total isn't zero for this year, didn't they stripe Cosburn this year? (or was that in 04?) Hope its not too late to put a real bike lane on Royal York but once they start paving and striping car lanes it obviously becomes difficult.
Tanya, Cosburn is good news. No sure if it's striped yet but thanks to some local cyclists in the area it is now part of the Bike Plan. Yay! The numbers I quoted came from the most recent staff report to the TCC. But I do hope some will be painted this year. It seems odd. As for Adam G., he should know better being a cyclist himself and having been doored in the past. Cyclists need space.
i am just outraged by the way this city treats cyclists! all (inadequate) word and not enough action.
today, i got a whopping $110 ticket for failing to stop at a stop sign on a quiet street near my house on my way to work. part of that 'cycle right' campaign. watch out!
News! Thanks to the work of several cycling activists there will be no 'Cycle Right' next year. It is my hope that there will less of this crap as well.
Unfortunately the program will still be around but it is suggested that there will be a name change to better reflect reality. There is also discussion on how to make the program more helpful to cyclists. A lot more work is to be done before we stop getting tickets for improper lights at high noon. The work is being done.-ds

dbike,
Either way he'd be doing more for cycling in Toronto.
Cosburn was painted last October, but the paint wore off almost completely over the winter, necessitating a redo.
Thank you Owen for clearing that up. Hope they
paint the lane SOON. My sources tell me that city
staff read this blog.
