We have the scoop! This is the next to last final mock up of the next TTC token to enter circulation spring 2007. Apparently the only thing left to decide is the size of the token. Although keeping the token size in line with the current design would allow the TTC to continue to use the same automated token collectors, cost will have no consideration in the final decision.The TTC chose this design over all of the other designs as it felt this design best represents it. Critics too admire the coin though wonder if the fare is too low. They wonder if the fare increase will be enough to cover the $100 million the TTC gave away to buy, untendered, new subway cars considering they are in need of 1 billion dollars. Chinese built subway cars are $100 million less expensive than those built in Thunder Bay, unfortunately the Chinese are not welcome here. Even Councillor Giambrone, touted as the future Chairman of the TTC, made it clear that a 5 to 10 cent increase in the fare results in a net gain of about $15 million. The $100 million in lost savings, Giambrone supported giving it away, would require by conservative estimates a 70 cent increase in the fare. The reduction in ridership cause by the fare increase was not factored into those numbers.
No word yet on how all of these increases will affect the poor, hopefully they have enough saved up for a bus ticket to Thunder Bay.

C'mon... Chineese labour laws aren't exactly created with the worker in mind. Why do you suppose they're so cheap?
The TTC is a load of crap, but I support buying the trains from Canada.
Chinese labour are more stringent than ours by far, on paper anyways. Somehow they manage to screw them up in the application. Regardless, if this is a concern then no Chinese product should be sold in Toronto period, that includes all of the Chinese bikes out there. Of course the politicos are only using the concern to cover up their incompetence.
There are too many hungry people in Toronto for the City to give away $100 million, imagine how many mouths that would feed and for how long. If the City had gone through the tender process there may have more savings to be found.
China constantly breaks the worlds human right codes sorry but that is a fact , TTC is racist in thier hiring practises and is WAY to top heavy why do you think that the salaries of the top guy's are never made public? people have been trying for years to get the books open on the TTC brass. that 100 million is going to more than just subway cars
Skeeter, you have things a little confused. Yes China runs afoul with human rights, so to does Canada with Native Indians. I guess you could argue that there are different degrees of abuse unless you are on the receiving end of it.
China's labour code is much more stringent and a lot better than anything we have in Canada. Unfortunately it is routinely ignored.
I have never heard anyone calling the TTC racist.
The issue hear is that we have a bunch of incompetents in charge of a lot of money. There should be checks and balances and the best way to do that is by tendering large contracts. All of their so called concerns over China only exist to disguise how incompetent they are. Too many people in Toronto are in need, blowing $100 million is not the way to go.
