Who cares about the future...

Especially if you are way too old to be part of it and too pig headed to listen to the people.
''When the roads were established in Mississauga, they were not established on the basis of bicycle lanes. The roads were built for cars and trucks,'' she said.... Ms. McCallion said the petition to add bicycle lanes will be given its due consideration, but no traffic lanes will be lost to include cycling commuters."Matthew Coutts, National Post

I'm shocked! Flabbergasted!! I thought she loved cycling!!

I ride into Mississauga every day. Definitely not much thought put into cycling issues here, although some members of their Cycling Advisory Committee seem very progressive and dedicated. But the city itself seems to only implement a few trails that go nowhere, or lead riders to dangerous situations.

Hazel's totally right about one thing though....this city was built for cars and trucks.

True, but that does not mean that it cannot change.

Less cyclists is good. Fewer things for Hazel to hit when driving "tired".

Wow. I thought someone boobooed and that was Case Ootes. Nonetheless, the similarity to Rob Ford's comment “Roads are for cars.” http://spacing.ca/votes/?cat=3&paged=2 is eerie. Have we unwarily been dragged into a war against a propoganda machine?
Mississauga is due some more visible cycling advocacy. I wish Gil Penalosa success there. http://cyclingcog.net/node/594

I'm convinced Burnamthorpe is deisgned to put cyclists in danger. There is a most excellent bike path well off to the side of the road, but to actually travel along it you have to navigate through the most dangerous and silly pedestrian crossings I have seen in this city. Plus every so often the trail just ends, meaning you have to merge back out into traffic who have no idea when to expect bikes. It would be so easy to just connect the trail and adjust the crosswalk timing and turn the yeilds to stops.

Didn't she have over 90% of the vote?

On second thought, her anti-cyclist comments are just plain discriminatory and quite frankly
unworthy of someone holding public office. Time for Hazel to step down.

The Burnhamthorpe bike path has already claimed a cyclist's life this year. Your fears are well founded.

Yup. This is what the Burnhamthorpe Trail is like: http://vic.gedris.org/pics/2006-04-07/

From someone who's birth predates the car, you think she'd have more affinity for bicycles...

And don't put too much credit on a lame photo-op of a politician on a bike. How many times have we seen Miller shmoozing...

i can count all the serious commuters in mississauga with two hands. all the people who do commute on bike are hard asses who dont need bike paths or anything like that. i myself do not bother with bike paths and other things like that, designed by non cyclists, bc they are dangerous.
