Toronto Rail Path Community Shed Grand Opening

At noon on Saturday October 29 Friends of West Toronto Railpath will officially open the Community shed on Railpath at the Wallace Avenue Bridge. This shed was donated to the path to help residents promote cycling, community gardening, and other events such as movie nights and Nuit Blanche.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Toronto_RailPath

The Railpath and the shed were supported by Railpath Friend Hilary Bell who passed away this summer and was much beloved for her tireless community volunteerism. With the approval of her family the shed will be known as Hilary’s Shed, a nod to her work and he good natured and informal personality.

On the 29th the shed will be officially opened and in keeping with hopes for future use Bike Pirates will be present to offer free bike tuneups and information right on the Railpath for the afternoon. Bikes for donation can also be dropped off and the Bike Pirates will refurbish them and give them a new life. Intended to help with outreach by groups such as the Bike Pirates the shed has also been recently used by Not Far From The Tree, an organization that harvests fruit from residential trees and donates the results to the homeowners and food banks.

Drop by and say hello, make new friends, fix your bike, and even better donate a bike.

New Bike Boxes on Beverley & College

Plus added right hand turn restriction on red. Also like the sandwich board with info. Well done!
A cyclist was killed in downtown Ottawa on a suggested cycling route. My heart goes out to the family. May I suggest removing parking on that street and adding a bike lane? Especially given that parking is permitted during rush hour on that street! Looks like the City of Ottawa has a lot of explaining to do and is liable for the death. A few years ago the same happened to Ron Freeman on College street at Grace. Nothing was ever done to fix the problematic intersection which often has cars parking illegally in front of a bank. Update: the driver was given a $110 fine and two demerit points.  Keep on driving!

Pharmacy Bike Lane Removed

5:50 PM Tuesday October 5, 2011
Comment by Marvin Macaraig on City of Toronto Cycling Facebook page: "Happy 1 Month Pharmacy Bike Lane Removal Anniversary!!! (Sarcasm) We should keep a running total of the days both lanes have been removed. In order to show the absurdity and wastefulness of this 'policy' decision. I was actually thinking of getting out on the street like how he did before the decision to ask residents about the removal. i.e., Traffic is not moving any faster, cyclists are still using Pharmacy and Birchmount, everything remains the same, except for the fact that if you are a cyclist your commute has become more dangerous over the last month."
