Another Anti-Cyclist Wants To Be Mayor In Toronto
In a speech today Toronto Mayoral candidate Rocco Rossi "promising to ban future bike lanes from arterial roads and reviewing all existing bike lanes on the major roads." Globe
"Jarvis has to be stopped."
Well, we won't be voting for that dinosaur!
More in the Star today ... translation: If you ride a bike stay off the main roads.
Those are for cars. Nice! Discriminate much, Mr. Rossi?
"Rossi was absolutely right when he said that “cars are simply a necessity for many people," and planners need to recognize that. However, his contention that this city suffers from too much traffic congestion due to a “war on the car” is backwards: the fact that we have so many cars on the road causing congestion is a direct result of urban design that has disproportionately favoured cars over other methods of transportation. The idea that we can somehow accommodate more cars on downtown roads while improving traffic conditions is fantasy. The best way to improve driving conditions is to offer better alternatives to driving."

George Smitherman - Anti-Cyclist?
(snip)
And on the so-called "war on the car", Smitherman said while he supported cycling, he didn't want to see Toronto's continued implementation of the Bike Plan impact on other forms of transportation.
And on the so-called "war on the car", Smitherman said while he supported cycling, he didn't want to see Toronto's continued implementation of the Bike Plan impact on other forms of transportation.
"What I've noticed is that there are quite a few divisions around here," he said.
"This notion of the conflict between the car and the bike - I think the obligation we have is to understand that the inefficiency associated with gridlock is a serious climate challenge. I'm interested to be a leader of a city that makes it easier to use bikes. At the same time, it's my obligation to try and build a greater consensus around an integrated transit plan, without fostering the idea that one form of transportation is being played off against the other."

Toronto Councillor Case Ootes
Case Ootes, the City Councillor every cyclist loves to hate will not run again for council next October.
Maybe there is hope for cycling in Toronto. He fought hard to remove the Cosburn bike lane and made sure cyclists in his ward were at the mercy of drivers. Good riddance.

Road Rage Driver Gets His Justice
"A doctor convicted of assaulting two bicyclists by slamming on his car brakes after a confrontation on a narrow Brentwood road was sentenced today to five years in prison.
Christopher Thompson, wearing dark blue jail scrubs, wept as he apologized to the injured cyclists shortly before he was sentenced.
"I would like to apologize deeply, profoundly from the bottom of my heart," he told them, his right hand cuffed to a court chair.
Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Scott T. Millington called the case a "wake-up call" to motorists and cyclists and urged local government to provide riders with more bike lanes. He said he believed that Thompson had shown a lack of remorse during the case and that the victims were particularly vulnerable while riding their bicycles."
